Holiday Magic
Words, Music and Activities by Hap Palmer |
|
|
 |
Introduction
"Its a time for love and sharing, a time to sing a joyful song" Hap Palmer's opening lines set the tone of this
magical collection of songs. A variety of musical styles from playful to reverent evoke the richness of the holiday
season. Hap's original songs and unique adaptations of traditional favorites invite active participation. Children
clap, stamp, jiggle and dance; they express things they are thankful for, play rhythm instruments, and sing along
with traditional favorites. The recordings also includes instrumental versions of all the songs making it an ideal
format for use in holiday programs and family and school sing-a-longs.
There are two ways to participate actively with this music.
1. Singing: This recording includes vocal and instrumental versions of all the songs. Once you are familiar
with a song you can sing on your own accompanied by the musical background. You can even make up your own words!
2. Moving: You can create movement activities to do as you sing.
1. What A World We Have
Words and Music: Hap Palmer
It's a time for love and sharing
A time to sing a joyful song
What a world we'd have
If Christmas lasted all year long
It's a time for hope and caring
For learning how to get along
What a world we'd have
If Christmas lasted all year long
Ring the bells loud and clear
So our message all can hear
Everyone on this earth
Has their own special worth
It's a time to think of others
To open up our hearts with song
What a world we'd have
If Christmas lasted all year long
It's a time to work together
To sing of peace with voices strong
What a world we'd have
If Christmas lasted all year long

2. Jingle Bells/Jingle Song
Traditional - Additional Word and Music: Hap Palmer
Jingle bells jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh ...Hey!
Jingle bells jingle bells
Jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle hands, jingle arms,
Jingle legs and feet
Oh what fun it is to shake
And wiggle with the beat...Hey!
Jingle knees, jingle nose
Jingle shoulders too
Oh what fun it is to shake
Every part of you!
Dashing 'round and 'round
In a merry way
Jumping up and down
Laughing all the way...Ha Ha Ha
Happy voices ring
Making spirits bright
Oh what fun it is to sing
A jingle song tonight
Oh, jingle head jingle hair
Jingle heels and hips
Oh what fun it is to shake
From toes to finger tips...Hey!
Jingle tongue jingle thumbs
Jingle elbows too
Oh what fun it is to shake
Every part of you!
Oh what fun it is to shake
Every part of you!
Start by singing the traditional holiday favorite, Jingle Bells.
In the verses that follow, the challenge is to do three or four things at
the same time.
Verse 1: Jiggle your hands, arms, legs, and feet.
Verse 2: Jiggle your knees, nose, and shoulders.
Verse 3: Run in a circle, jump and laugh.
Verse 4: Jiggle your head, hair, heels and hips.
Verse 5: Jiggle your thumbs, tongue, and elbows.
(Note: To begin with, have younger children do just one or two things at once.)

3. Caroling, Caroling
Words and Music: Al Burt, W. Hutson
Caroling, caroling now we go
Christmas bells are ringing
Caroling, caroling through the snow
Christmas bells are ringing
Joyous voices sweet and clear
Sing the sad of heart to cheer
Ding, dong, ding, dong,
Christmas bells are ringing
Caroling, caroling through the town
Christmas bells are ringing
Caroling, caroling up and down
Christmas bells are ringing
Mark ye well the song we sing
Gladsome tidings now we bring
Ding, dong, ding, dong,
Christmas bells are ringing
Caroling, caroling near and far
Christmas bells are ringing
Following, following yonder star
Christmas bells are ringing
All across the land they chime
Heralding this happy time
Ding, dong, ding, dong,
Christmas bells are ringing

4. The Angel Band
Traditional - Additional Words and Music: Hap Palmer
One glorious Christmas morning
Ten angels did appear
And each one held an instrument
Carefully made by hand
First they counted off to ten
Playing one by one
Then they played together
In a joyful Angel Band
There was one, there were two,
There were three little angels
There were four, there were five,
There were six little angels
There were seven, there were eight,
There were nine little angels
Ten little angels in the band.
Oh, wasn't that a band, Christmas morning
Christmas morning, Christmas morning,
Wasn't that a band, Christmas morning
Ten little angels in the band
For this song, you will need one rhythm instrument for each participant. (Examples: wood block,
tambourine, triangle, bells, sticks, maracas, and shaker. These can be store bought or homemade.)
Count off from one to ten. When your number is called, strike or shake your instrument one time.
Then, everybody play at once as you sing the chorus:
Oh Wasn't that a band Christmas morning
Christmas morning, Christmas morning
Wasn't that a band Christmas morning.
Ten little angels in the band

5. Merry Christmas Santa
Words and Music: Jim Ware, W. Christy
Santa goes around making Christmas
For little boys and girls everywhere
You can feel him in your heart
When it's late at night
And Christmas eve is here
But Santa While you're out there
All alone in your sleigh
I hope that you can hear me
Tonight when I say
Chorus
Merry Christmas Santa
Here's my Christmas wish for you
I just want to thank you
For everything you do
And while you're out there giving
It's time that you receive
So Merry Christmas Santa
Merry Christmas to you from me
Santa is the one that you write to
To tell him what you want Christmas day
What a thrill it is to know
That the season's here
And Santa's on his way
But Santa while you're making
Christmas wishes all come true
I felt that you might like it
If someone said to you
(Repeat chorus)

6. Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer
Words and Music: Johnny Marks
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever say it
You would even say it glows
All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Play in any reindeer games
Then one foggy Christmas eve
Santa came to say
Rudolph with you nose so bright
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight
Then how the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
You'll go down in history

7. Chanukah, Oh Chanukah
Traditional
Oh Chanukah
Oh Chanukah, Oh Chanukah,
Come light the Menorah
Let's have a party
We'll all dance the Horah
Gather 'round the table
We'll give you some treats
Draydles to play with
And latkes to eat
And while we are playing
The candles are burning low
One for each night
They shed a sweet light
To remind us of days long ago
One for each night
They shed a sweet light
To remind us of days long ago

8. Things I'm Thankful For
Words and Music: Hap Palmer
Things I'm Thankful For
There are many things I am thankful for
I can find them near and far
There are many things I am thankful for
Let me tell you what they are
I'm thankful for the earth
I'm thankful for the sea
I'm thankful for my friends
And I'm thankful to be me.
There are many things I am thankful for
I can find them near and far
There are many things I am thankful for
Let me tell you what they are
I'm thankful for the sun
I'm thankful for each tree
I'm thankful for my home
And I'm thankful to be me
There are many things I am thankful for
I can find them near and far

Let me tell you what they are
I'm thankful for my food
I'm thankful to be free
I'm thankful for the stars
And I'm thankful to be me
Sing along with the vocal version of this song. After you have learned the song, think of things
you are thankful for and sing your own words accompanied by the instrumental version. You
may want to write out your list, or work together and make a group list. You can also work in
small groups of three or four. Take turns naming things you are thankful for. After the song,
see if you can answer the following questions:
Can you recall something someone in your group was thankful for?
What did you say you were thankful for?
Can you think of something else you are thankful for?

9. The Merry Hula
Words and Music: Hap Palmer
When it's Christmas day in Hawaii
All the little elves do the hula
Their work is done and it's time for fun
In the tropical island sun
When it's Christmas day in Hawaii
They dance and play their tiny ukuleles
They've made the toys for the girls and boys
Now they sing of Yuletide joys, and they sing:
Ho ho ho and a ha ha ha
Ooo we love to do the Merry Hula
Tee hee hee and a tra la la
Ooo we love to do the Merry Hula

Little children jump with glee

When it's Christmas day in Hawaii
Santa takes a break to do some surfin'
He looks real cute in his swimming' suit

11. The Baby's Carol
Words: Martha Cheney, Music: Hap Palmer
Love was born in that lowly place
See it shining in Mary's face
Lighting the world and starry skies
Oh love in a baby's eyes
Hope was born on that lonely night
through the darkness he came as light
Dawning to bid the shadows part
Oh hope from a baby's heart
And joy was born in that stable bare
Angel hosts behold him there
Happily greet this holy child,
Oh Joy in a baby's smile
Peace was born in that simple stall
Softly reaching to touch us all
Tenderly blessing every land
Oh peace in a baby's hand
